The Clinical Nurse V, with advanced educational preparation and expertise in nursing practice, has the primary responsibilities of practitioner, educator, administrator/manager, consultant and researcher in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit. Utilizing a wide range of alternatives in problem solving situations, and using the nursing process, the incumbent demonstrates a high degree of professional expertise.
 
The CNS is the clinical leader in developing new educational and performance improvement initiatives and policies to improve nursing knowledge and patient care in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and hospital wide. Works in collaboration with the Unit Director and multidisciplinary team members in developing criteria for patient care, assessing health needs of patients, and evaluating outcomes of nursing intervention to improve care and assure best practice. Directs the new graduate RN orientation program and continuing education of existing staff based on unit needs. Is a hospital-wide resource for cardio-thoracic care issues and concerns throughout the institution.  Initiates and develops research and evidence-based practice initiatives to assure best outcomes.
 
Qualifications:
 
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nursing in the State of California.
  • Masters Degree prepared in Nursing with CNS specialty required, with 3-5 years of recent clinical experience in area of specialization, Adult Cardiothoracic ICU.
  • Must be certified by the California Board of Registered Nursing as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. 
  • Required- Cardiothoracic ICU, Heart and Lung transplant experience. Ventricular Assist Device experience preferred

Description:

 

University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking a Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS with a desire to join our premier multidisciplinary team in our Cardiac Surgery Program. The CNS provides leadership in the professional development and instruction of staff in the provision of high-tech care to patients requiring a variety of cardiac surgical interventions, including ventricular assist devices, heart-lung transplant, and other cardiac diagnoses. Our newly expanded, 24-bed Cardiac Surgery Step down Unit serves as referral centers for patients in Maryland and beyond.

This key role performs analysis and development of a strategic plan for clinical education, provides consultative services and expertise in the design and delivery of unit-based educational programs and identifies appropriate measures to monitor educational effectiveness. This role will influence patient outcomes through process improvement and research activities.

The successful candidate will be a graduate of a Masters program in Nursing, and hold certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Maryland nursing licensure, and at least 5 years of cardiac and telemetry monitoring clinical experience is also necessary.
