Description:
 
The position will predominantly involve clinical and teaching responsibilities on the inpatient and consultation-liaison (C-L) service, with special emphasis on inpatient and outpatient transplant consults, with some opportunities for research.

Teaching activities will include being an attending physician on an inpatient treatment team and in the C-L service with regular instruction and supervision of psychiatry residents and medical students. Candidates must possess or be eligible for a permanent California medical license and must be board-eligible in psychiatry.

Full time NHS Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist in the Departments of Psychological Medicine, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (8 sessions) and Western General Hospital, Edinburgh (2 sessions).


This post is intended to fill a gap between the retirement of Dr
George Masterton and the appointment of his substantive successor. It is available from November 3rd 2009, for three months in the first instance, with a view to extension by up to a further three months.


The Department of
Psychological Medicine is at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, the oldest and largest Liaison Psychiatry service in Scotland, and one of the oldest and largest in the UK. Together with its sister department at Western General Hospital, it provides a comprehensive Psychiatric service to all areas of Edinburgh’s two large acute teaching hospitals, including Accident and Emergency, Acute Assessment Units, all wards and outpatient clinics. In addition there are specifically funded specialist services to Liver Transplant, Kidney Transplant, Perinatal Psychiatry and the regional Infectious Diseases Unit for blood-borne viruses.


The postholder will provide, along with current
Consultants, general liaison services to the two sites, for four days per week at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and one day per week at Western General Hospital. There is a rota of 2:7 to provide weekend morning telephone supervision to the self-harm service.
