Research Associate – Transplant Institute (09-1640), Description: Research studies in this lab involves finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. The lab works both with in vitro and in vivo studies We need a research associate with some lab experience with in vivo study in mice and non-human primates. Research studies in our Transplant Research Institute will center upon organ and cell transplantation. The goal of this research is to create a regimen that will safely and efficiently induce transplant tolerance. We are seeking to hire a Research Associate with some surgical experience to work in large animal transplant model (non-human primates). Expertise or knowledge in diabetes or transplant immunology is desirable but not mandatory for employment. This Research Associate will work under the supervision of Dr. M. Koulmanda. Often we will study the effect of therapies that proved successful in rodent models. The impact of successful therapies will be studied at the cellular and molecular levels in collaboration with investigators based within the BIDMC Transplant Institute. In short the research associate will conduct experiments requiring surgery, administration of therapies and collection of samples in large animal (monkeys) models of transplantation. Where feasible the Research Associate will learn to perform the analytic techniques used to identify the precise impact of the treatment regimen. · Utilizing sophisticated research methods available through investigators at the Transplant Institute, we will attempt to induce transplant tolerance and define the precise mechanism underlying the acquisition of transplant tolerance. · Carry out experiments and treatment in laboratory animals (mice and monkeys) in prevention and curing of diabetes. Organize the data and plan the necessary steps in carrying out the outcomes of the experiments. Organize non-human islet transplantation and follower up treatments. · Utilizing specialized knowledge of transplantation, sophisticated research methods and a mixture of treatments we look at ways that can cure diabetes as well as prevent it if detected in earlier stages. · Works with highest level of independence. Within guidelines established by PI is responsible for daily operations of the laboratory. · Responsible for modifications of experimental techniques and troubleshooting problems as they research protocols arise. Designs in conjunction with PI. · Collect, record analyze and presents data as well as helping in preparing projects for publication in medical and technical journals or for presentations at professional field meetings or conferences. · The goal of this research project is to create a protocol that will cure diabetes or prevent it. · Independently conducts complex technical procedures.
