Location: Houston, Texas

 

Description:

 

The communication specialist will service as a focal point for all donors and potential donors from all existing target LifeGift markets. In addition, dispatch these calls to the appropriate organ/tissue donation specialist.

Hours: 2PM – 10:30PM

 

Essential Functions:

 

·    Answer all incoming phone calls from all existing and target LifeGift markets.

·    Receive and document all incoming organ referrals and dispatch organ donation specialists to hospitals.

·    Receive and document all incoming tissue referrals and assess for donation suitability.

·    Input data into the LifeGift Communication Center computer system such as medical, biographical, and general data regarding the prospective donor.

·    Monitor the organ/tissue donation specialists’ schedule to know their “on call” status and location at all times.

·    Obtain consent from families for tissue donation via telephone and in person.

·    Facilitate communication between transplant centers and medical directors.

·    Communicate with couriers, charter airlines, ambulance services, media, and the public.

·    Communicate and coordinate donor transport.

·    Communicate with funeral homes and medical examiners.

 

Reporting Relationships:

 

The communications specialist will report directly to the Mgr, Clinical Communication and Logistics.

 

Qualifications:

 

·    Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

·    Minimum of state certification in Emergency Medical Technician Basic or equivalent experience is required.

·    Paramedic certification is preferred but not required.

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has an opportunity available for a Communications Specialist within the Department of Surgery and Organ Procurement located on our Medical campus. The Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) is division of the University Of Miami Department Of Surgery. The goals of LAORA are to obtain organs for clinical transplantation throughout southeastern Florida, to transport them to transplant centers within the U.S. and to support donor families through the donation process. LAORA procures an average of 400 organs per year from over 80 donor hospitals. The collaborative relationship that LAORA has with these hospitals is of paramount importance in achieving its goals. This position is responsible for the communication and clinical education of donation clinical triggers to multiple hospital business units within the donor service area (DSA) of LAORA.

The purpose of this position is to increase donor referrals and LAORA’s visibility through scheduled strategic hospital communications and general education. This position will communicate organ procurement related information to hospital medical staff via in-services, rounds, and orientations. Works collaboratively with the medical, nursing, and other departments as necessary in the coordination of educational programs related to donation, and maintains open communications with hospital personnel regarding donation processes.


Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a health related field and a minimum three to five (3-5) years related experience required. Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license. Emphasis in customer service, marketing or sales preferred. Hospital and/or clinical experience a plus. Demonstrated computer knowledge and ability to use Word, Excel, Access, the Internet or comparable software is essential. Must be able to work in a hospital setting and outside of normal business hours, including nights and weekends, and adhere to an on-call schedule. Travel by personal auto is required, and ability to commute within designated service area. Must utilize personal finances to perform hospital development activity and then submit expenses for reimbursement appropriately. Required to carry a mobile phone/pager and respond at all times except when on PTO. Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and / or certifications will be considered.
