The Hematology/Oncology/BMT unit provides specialized care for children with hematological and oncologic illnesses. A sample of our patients’ diagnoses would include sickle cell disease, clotting disorders, anemias, leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumors and other malignancies. Patients requiring blood and bone marrow transplant for treatment of their illness are also cared for on this unit. The unit has several unique features including a Day Hospital area, a Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic and also has the only designated hospice bed for the hospital. The Day Hospital area facilitates the transition to the inpatient setting for selected patients who require specialized treatment which may lead to the need for admission and the Bone Marrow Transplant clinic serves patient post transplant. The unit is structured to enhance the family-centered care model that Nationwide Children’s uses as its standard. Nurses collaborate daily with hematology/oncology’s multidisciplinary team to ensure the family-centered care model is used effectively.
