Pulmonary Transplant Director (Transplant Pulmonologist) Opportunity, Spectrum Health Medical Group, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Practice Description:

A new era of integrated care has arrived at Spectrum Health, recently recognized as a Top Ten U.S. Health System by Thomson Reuters. The Spectrum Health Medical Group (SHMG), launched in October 2008, brings physicians together to practice as an integrated team.

Nearly 500 providers are currently in the Spectrum Health Medical Group, and rapid expansion is underway, with a major emphasis on growing the existing Pulmonary/Critical Care division. Spectrum’s commitment to cardiopulmonary care is underscored by the creation of the Frederik Meijer Heart & Vascular Institute, coupled with the recent recruitment of Dr. Asghar Khaghani, a world renowned cardiothoracic surgeon.

The Frederik Meijer Heart & Vascular Institute is dedicated to establishing a new standard of health care and, in due course, becoming the model cardiovascular program for the future. Together, with the Van Andel Institute, and the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, the Institute will form a highly collaborative approach that closely integrates clinical care at the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center with research and medical education. This partnership will translate into a multi-disciplinary model that ensures higher levels of excellence and innovation.

Meanwhile, the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center has consistently provided high-quality heart services to the West Michigan community since 2004. The Center is equipped with state-of-the-art medical and information technology. The heart center features the following: 164 patient beds, a medical staff of more than 50 specialists, more than 8,500 inpatients each year, the only 24-hour chest pain center in the area, and a facility consisting of eight floors and 330,000 square feet. The Heart Failure Program, which is unrivalled in West Michigan, provides all the latest technology for comprehensive cardiovascular care, including mechanical circulatory assistance (HeartMate II®).

Dr. Asghar Khaghani joined Spectrum Health in July 2010, adding yet another critical dimension to Spectrum’s comprehensive cardiovascular clinical care capabilities – cardiothoracic transplantation.

Before joining Spectrum Health, Dr. Khaghani was a consultant in cardiothoracic surgery at Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust in England. Dr. Khaghani began cardiac and transplantation surgery at Harefield Hospital under the supervision and mentorship of Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub who, in turn, has consulted with Spectrum Health concerning its heart program since 2002.

While at Harefield, Dr. Khaghani served as Director of Transplantation. Having performed over 1,000 heart transplants and more than 5,000 cardiothoracic surgeries, Dr. Khaghani is considered a pioneer in the field, and has been responsible for numerous innovations in cardiothoracic transplantation. He also has extensive experience with ventricular assist devices.

The Richard DeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Program at Spectrum Health – made possible through a major gift from the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation – now offers world-class transplant care for patients in West Michigan and beyond. The current heart transplant program is part of the Frederik Meijer Heart & Vascular Institute and the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center. Dr. Khaghani serves as the Richard DeVos Chair for Heart & Lung Transplant Surgery at Spectrum Health. Partnering with Dr. Khaghani is Dr. Michael G. Dickenson, who is Medical Director of heart transplantation, advanced heart failure and ventricular assist device programs at Spectrum Health.
