In concert with our physicians, The Cardiovascular Service Line seeks an experienced VAD coordinator to assist in the development of a new and exciting BTT & DT program that offers VAD patients comprehensive health assessments, physical examinations, and care by demonstrating a high level of expert skill in the diagnosis, treatment and management of VAD patients.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

The successful nurse practitioner candidate will have a certificate of completion from an approved program for Nurse Practitioners, be eligible for or hold national certification and must be eligible for licensure by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
Requires master’s prepared Advanced Practitioner with VAD experience; including minimum of 3 years clinical experience in critical care or a perfussionist or BSN with extensive experience. Minimum of three (3) years of professional clinical experience in critical care Minimum of one (1) year experience caring for VAD patients required One (1) year of experience as a VAD Coordinator or Transplant Coordinator preferred.Prefer candidates with one year VAD Coordinator experience; Heart Transplant Coordinator experience also highly regarded.

Attend daily rounds on LVAD inpatients; provide in-house LVAD patient care, etc.; participate in heart transplant conference; complete clinical evaluation of potential candidates for ventricular assist device intervention; assist with pump preparation and start up activities in operating room; interview and treat patients during clinic appointments; coordinate readmissions for LVAD patients having difficulties; provide clinic support to patients leaving the unit for tests and procedures; assist with maintenance supplies for patients on device and for potential implants; coordinate outpatient LVAD clinic and patient discharge. Provide education and support for patients, families and health care professionals. Coordinate data management, insurance coverage and conduct research activities.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of clinical expertise and assessment skills related to cardiovascular nursing required. The ability to demonstrate strong leadership, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills required with the ability to motivate staff and inspire high quality work. Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan, execute and control the operation of a complex service required. Ability to set ambitious goals and achieve results in the face of challenges. Education, Licensure and Experience:

Minimum three (3) years experience in cardiovascular nursing, cardiac surgical nursing, critical care nursing, cardiac transplantation, and/or care of patients with ventricular assist devices required. Texas RN license, NP certification and Texas NP registration required.

The VAD coordinator is a NP/APRN who provides comprehensive, specialized care of inpatient and outpatient heart failure patients who require VAD therapy or received a VAD device. You will participate in all aspects of care for these patients. The VAD Coordinator maintains the INTERMACS VAD Registry for Hartford Hospital. Other responsibilities will include collaborating with the team to implement an outpatient VAD clinic, identifying; developing and implementing/or facilitating the educational, care and service needs of patients, families, and health care providers for this population. This may include working over budgeted hours and does include on-call time.

Position Requirements:


The position requires previous experience with device therapy, an MSN, Nurse Practitioner Certification and CT APRN license. Minimum 4 years recent acute care clinical experience or advanced heart failure care with 2 years in specialty also required. This highly visible position requires the ability to positively interact with all members of the multidisciplinary health care team, patients and families as well as community resources.

Job Summary:

 

UPMC Presbyterian is hiring a part-time clinical VAD/transplant coordinator I to help support the day to day operations of the Artificial Heart Program department for its Oakland location.  This position will be working various days and 10 hour shifts.  This position is an entry-level clinical VAD coordinator position.  This clinical VAD coordinator I has the authority, responsibility, and accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the use of the nursing process.  The clinical VAD coordinator I, in collaboration with clinical VAD coordinators II, Supervisor, clinical VAD coordinator, the VAD team and other health care professionals, applies competent clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality care outcomes.

 

Responsibilities:

 

·    Visit all inpatients daily who are candidates for, or who are on, any artificial heart mechanical support device.  Educates patient and family about device technology; confirms candidacy for clinical studies and gathers informed consent documents.

·    Round daily with the MDs and other health care team members to define patient care needs and provide nursing input on patient management.

·    On-call requirements as a resource for clinical staff and outpatients/caregivers.

·    Coordinate the scheduling of tests and procedures for patients in caseload and assist in communicating the results.  Accompany patients to testing procedures when medically necessary.

·    Implement research study protocols for ongoing or planned use of mechanical support devices as a bridge to cardiac transplantation, destination therapy or bridge to recovery.

 

Basic Qualifications:

 

·    Five years clinical nursing experience

·    Demonstrated competence in professional nursing practice.

·    BSN required.

·    Must obtain a 2.5 or higher on annual performance review to be promoted to Clinical VAD Coordinator II.

 

Licensure/Certifications:

 

·    Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

·    Within two years must obtain certification from the American Board for VAD Certification (ABTC) as a Certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator (CCTC) upon eligibility.
