This position is responsible and accountable for the programmatic, regulatory and clinical development of the Scripps Health Left Ventricular Assist (LVAD)  Program. Leads staff and physicians to achieve vision and goal. 
 
Collaborates with Medical Director/Medical Co-Manager and Multi-Disciplinary Team and acts as team leader for all aspect of programmatic and clinical develop.  Contributes to strategic direction, implements program development activities and contributes to strategic marketing efforts. 
 
Creates performance improvement objectives and initiatives; identifies and implements operational improvements throughout the continuum of care that focus on continually improving the outcomes of LVAD patients and maintaining regulatory compliance.
 
Develops, implements and oversees clinical policies and procedures which conform to regulatory and patient care standards.  Coordinates and integrates care pertaining to this patient population between all services within Scripps Health integrated delivery system and liaisons with community and affiliated health providers and services. 
 
Participates as a licensed independent practitioner (LIP) within the medical staff privileging guidelines in the evaluation, medical management, hospitalization and on-going care of patients. Coordinates care of patients throughout the continuum to optimize the patient's clinical, functional, and psychosocial status.
 
Responsible for staff, patient/family, affiliated services/provider and public education regarding LVAD as a heart failure treatment modality, and related clinical protocols that optimize outcomes.
 
Current California licensure as a Nurse Practitioner.   Master’s degree required in nursing and graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) Program required (prefer Acute Care, Adult or Family Practice).   California Furnishing Number required within 6 months of hire.  Minimum 3 years clinical experience in acute/intensive care setting with medical and/or surgical cardiac patients and 3 years experience as clinical/program coordinator in certified LVAD/circulatory assist program required (may be concurrent).  Participation in cardiac related research desired.

Under physician supervision, coordinates care of acutely ill post-surgical patients in multiple intensive care and acute care unit settings. The clinician will complete detailed histories and physicals and present pertinent data to the medical staff. Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and minor surgical procedures. Assist attending physician in orientation of new resident physicians to the service and assist in maintaining continuity of care throughout the Cardiovascular center. Maintain accurate documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatment. Streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including writing discharge orders and communicating specific patient needs to team members. Participation in quality assurance activities. Perform other related duties as required. Utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment. Note: This is a full time position which includes afternoon, night, weekend and holidays shifts as required by the service.

PA: Satisfactory completion of approved Physician Assistant program and current national certification Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Michigan. At least 5 years recent experience in the ICU or emergency room setting. Nurse practitioners function in collaboration with a physician, dentist or podiatrist according to a Standard Care Arrangement. Nurse practitioners are registered nurses with advanced education, usually at a Masters of doctoral level. Their practice emphasizes health promotion and maintenance, disease prevention and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. Nurse practitioners in the critical care role provide advanced nursing care to patients with complex, acute, critical and chronic health conditions including the delivery of acute care services. Practice with a variety of specialty-based populations including neonatal, pediatric, and adult. May include the performance of diagnostic and therapeutic interventions to manage acute and chronic health problems and promote physiologic stability. Skill set dependent upon the specific patient population and specialty-based area of practice. Critical care nurse practitioners practice in settings that require complex monitoring and therapies and high intensity nursing interventions, including interventions to support the patient with rapidly deteriorating physiologic conditions. Minimum Qualifications:
 
Master's or doctoral degree preferred. Demonstrated mastery of nursing concepts and principles and abilty to identify and use appropriate concepts and principles from related sciences; e.g. behavioral sciences and biological sciences. Excellent analytical and decision making skills are required. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work as a member of a multi disciplinary team. Two years of current clinical experience in clinical nursing. Registerd Nurse currently licensed in the State of Ohio. National certification as Acute Care Nurse Practitioner required. Responsibilities include first or second assisting at surgery, placement and removal of chest tubes and lines, pre-operative and post-operative assessment of surgical patients (congenital heart disease and thoracic surgical); assisting with management of patients in the intensive care unit as needed, and maintenance of surgical database. Other responsibilities include participation in quality assessment and improvement activities, identify important aspects of care, and assure findings are used to improve practice and operations.

The medical center also has one of the most highly evolved general thoracic surgical services with a very active lung transplant program. The Physician assistant will help cross cover (with an existing PA team) the thoracic surgery program and lung transplantation.

Requirements:

Background in pre-med
Degree as a Physician Assistant
Certification as PA from Arizona Joint Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners
Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in related area
